Hello all,

It is with mixed emotions that we share some news regarding Wibben Detasseling's plans for the upcoming 2024 season. After much consideration and reflection, we have made the difficult decision not to proceed with detasseling operations this year.

First and foremost, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the opportunity to work with all of you over these many years. The scope of our operation has spanned generations! I, Cale, have worked 39 detasseling seasons, Sarah has had 27 seasons, Bill has been with us for 28 seasons, and Greg has us all beat with 42 seasons.

We have had the privilege to work with thousands of local young people over the years, and have loved watching you face challenges and grow, as we were growing ourselves.

I would also like to thank my parents, Herman and Marty Wibben who started Wibben Detasseling in 1981 and ran it for many years before handing the company over to us in 1998. They have taught us everything we know about corn and about life in general and have always been there for advice and support when we needed it!

While the decision not to detassel this season brings a sense of closure, it also opens up new opportunities for us to spend more time with our loved ones and pursue personal interests. We look forward to cherishing the time this summer with our families and friends!

Thank you once again for your understanding and support during this transition. While this chapter may be coming to a close, we remain forever grateful for the memories, friendships, and experiences that define our time together at Wibben Detasseling.

Great job today everyone!
I did see a lot of people today wearing jeans. There are a lot better options for detasseling pants than jeans or sweatpants, both of which get really heavy and saggy when wet. Basketball type shorts with athletic leggings underneath are a popular choice. (must wear leggings under, no shorts by them selves) Thin cotton pants like Dockers also work well. They don't stretch out as much so they stay up, and they dry quickly. Synthetic track type pants work great too! If you have to wear jeans, you need to wear a belt to keep them up when they get wet and heavy! Everyone remember to keep hydrating! Eat a big, healthy dinner, and go to bed early!

Thank you for signing up to detassel this season! We have started calling some employees to start this weekend. We don’t have enough work to call everyone for the first day. We will call or text each person individually to give you your start date. If you don’t hear from us today, Wednesday the 5th or tomorrow, Thursday the 6th, please be patient and we will call you as soon as we have enough work for everyone! We are calling people in order of completed applications, so if you had to mail an ID or your parental consent for in, we might not be able to call you right at first. We plan to have enough work for everyone (who has completed their application) soon, as the season gets going and the corn gets ready to be detasseled! Thank you for your patience!

Paycheck update:
The first pay period was July 8th-July 21st. It will take approximately 5 business days to process the checks. They should be in the mail by Friday July 29th. Then a couple days for mail and in your hands early next week! The first check will be for the base rate of $10/hour. Crew boss bonuses and attendance bonuses will be paid on the final check. Also, I want to clarify that the days that 13 year olds had scheduled off will not count against their attendance bonuses!

Storm Safety We work in the rain but not in thunderstorms or if there is lightning in the area. If storms are visible or in the forecast, supervisors will be monitoring radar and the sky. If a storm does roll up while we are working, stay with your crew, and wait for instructions. If we need to exit the field due to lighting in the area, the field supervisor will be in contact with the crew bosses and field bosses via radio to give them instructions. If it becomes necessary, workers will exit the field as a crew in an orderly manner at a brisk walk. DO NOT RUN. In an emergency, supervisors will sound the air horn to alert workers to hurry to the bus. Workers will be counted and accounted for as you board the bus. We will shelter on the bus until the storm threat has passed. Workers are paid for the time they wait on the bus for a storm to pass. Usually we will wait out the storm and return to work.

For a successful Detasseling season we require you to wear or bring each day:

*RAIN GEAR - Bring this every day whether it looks like it’s going to rain or not! A raincoat or poncho, or large trash bag with holes cut for your head and arms.

*Your lunch – bring more food than you think you will need. Avoid sugary snacks, soda, and energy drinks. Concentrate on protein like peanut butter or lunch meat, complex carbs like whole grain bread, salty snacks, fruit, and Gatorade type sports drinks.

*Tennis shoes or boots- Jogging shoes work great–avoid loose, floppy rubber boots. Socks must come up higher than the top of your shoes. Shorty socks are guaranteed to give you blisters!

*A long sleeve shirt – thin, light colored cotton with neck and cuff buttons is best. A button-able collar will protect your neck. Long sleeves are now mandatory.

*Long pants – Thin cotton type fabric is best. Jeans are heavy when wet and take a long time to dry. Long pants are mandatory. Leggings work well. Shorts with long socks are no longer allowed.

*A bandana to tie around your neck, to keep your throat from getting scratched by corn or the back of your neck from getting sunburned. Now required in the field to protect each other from corona virus.(Other cloth face coverings are acceptable).

*Sunscreen.

*WATER JUG - Everyone needs to bring a water jug to drink from. A gallon size insulated jug is recommended. Water is provided to refill jugs and bottles as needed throughout the day!

*Bring something warm to wear in the morning, something dry to wear on the way home, and a change of socks. Consider bringing flip flops for after work. Bare feet are not allowed at any time in the field.

*To avoid chaffing and discomfort, we recommend you wear compression shorts or some other Underamour type leggings under your pants. Frog Tog or Bog Tog type rain gear does not hold up in corn fields therefore is not recommended.

All workers are provided with and required to wear safety glasses, hats with nets, and gloves in the field at all times. Personal sunglasses must be SAFETY GLASSES and be stamped with a “Z-87”. If you wear prescription glasses you must wear safety glasses over them or safety side shields (provided). You must wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt~no shorts or tank tops! You MUST wear your safety equipment and proper attire at all times in the field. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Following the rules and being prepared will help us all have a safe and successful season!

Eating a big breakfast is the single most important thing you can do to have a good day!!!

*You are responsible for any daily medication you may need. (Inhaler for asthma, Epipen for bee stings.)
